Description:
Background
We are seeking a hands-on IT consultant to provide rapid, onsite support for business-critical engineering, test, lab, and office environments in Greensboro. The consultant will diagnose and resolve incidents at the point of need, coordinate escalation to local and global support teams, and help maintain secure, reliable IT services that minimize disruption to operations.
Our team supports critical engineering and test operations across office, laboratory, HIL rig, and specialized device environments. We work closely with end users, onsite technicians, service desks, and global infrastructure teams to restore service quickly, protect operational continuity, and improve recurring support processes.
Role Description
As the Time-Critical & Onsite IT Support Specialist, you will be the local technical contact for urgent incidents and day-to-day IT needs affecting engineering productivity. You will provide hands-on troubleshooting, restore service within agreed priorities, communicate status to users and stakeholders, and engage the appropriate resolver groups when an issue requires specialized or global support.
The assignment is primarily operational and onsite. It includes support for Windows clients, engineering workstations, test and lab computers, HIL rigs, peripherals, local connectivity, software installations, access issues, and other infrastructure dependencies. The consultant will also support planned maintenance, upgrades, deployments, and remediation activities that reduce operational risk.
Success in this assignment requires responsiveness, clear communication, disciplined ticket updates, and ownership from initial diagnosis through resolution or confirmed handoff. The consultant is expected to identify recurring issues, document solutions, and recommend practical improvements to service stability and support efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide onsite, hands-on support for time-critical incidents affecting engineering, test, lab, and office operations.
- Triage incidents, determine business impact and urgency, restore service where possible, and escalate promptly to the correct resolver team.
- Troubleshoot Windows clients, engineering workstations, hardware, software, peripherals, access, connectivity, and local infrastructure dependencies.
- Support test and lab computers, HIL rigs, specialized engineering devices, and associated network connections.
- Install, configure, replace, and maintain approved client hardware, software, applications, communication tools, and peripherals.
- Support planned deployments, client migrations, upgrades, patching, vulnerability remediation, and equipment refresh activities.
- Maintain accurate incident, request, asset, and work-log information in the designated service-management tools.
- Provide timely status updates to affected users, stakeholders, service desks, and technical teams during critical incidents.
- Coordinate with local and global infrastructure teams and remain engaged until service is restored or ownership is formally transferred.
- Document troubleshooting steps, known fixes, and recurring problems; recommend practical improvements that reduce downtime.
- Follow Volvo Group security, safety, change-management, and site-access requirements.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated experience providing onsite deskside or field IT support in a business-critical environment.
- Strong troubleshooting capability across Windows clients, PCs, laptops, peripherals, software, user access, and network connectivity.
- Experience supporting engineering, manufacturing, test, or laboratory environments is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of LAN connectivity, endpoint security, patching, software deployment, and hardware lifecycle activities.
- Experience using IT service-management tools and working within incident, request, change, and problem-management processes.
- Ability to assess urgency, manage competing priorities, and remain effective during high-impact incidents.
- Clear written and verbal communication in English, with disciplined documentation and stakeholder updates.
- Ability to work onsite in Greensboro and perform hands-on installation, connection, replacement, and troubleshooting of IT equipment.
- Relevant technical education or equivalent practical experience.
Personal Profile
The successful consultant is service-minded, calm under pressure, and comfortable working directly with users in active engineering environments. You take ownership, communicate clearly, and balance speed with security, safety, and process compliance.
You are proactive, dependable, and able to work independently while collaborating effectively with local and global teams. You focus on restoring service, keeping stakeholders informed, and leaving clear documentation for future support.
Listed salary ranges may vary based on experience, qualifications, and local market.
